Low Carb Foods I Want to Experiment With

Egg White Frosting made with Splenda and lemon juice.  Recipe calls for cream of tartar, but it is so expensive.

Draining Greek Yogurt and seasoning to put on grilled vegetables.

The Bottom Line on Negative Exponents

Negative a squared is evaluated as if a squared is in parentheses.  So a squared could be a negative already and then negative a squared would be a positive number.

Low Sugar Cereals

Post Great Grains had less sugar than similar cereals.  I like to eat raisin bran, but the raisin just add too much sugar almost 20 g of sugar per cup of cereal.  I like sweet stuff.  "Barbara's" trademark Puffins cereal Peanut Butter & Chocolate has ONLY 6 g of sugar and 105 mg of salt per 3/4 cup.  I can live with this.
I switched to powered nonfat milk.  2% is NOT ok for weightloss or diabetes.

Canadian Farm Organic Chocolate O's 8 g of sugar and 95 mg of salt per 3/4 cup!

Egg Yolks - I don't miss them Spiced in a whole grain sandwich.

Scrambled egg whites with Mrs. Dash Table Blend, some purple onion, a teaspoon of mayo on Orowheat sandwich thins with some lettuce.  Very low fat, low salt, no sugar breakfast.

No Fat No Salt in Mrs Dash seasonings

Lemon Pepper Mrs. Dash on fish and I only put Crisco olive oil spray on the cookie sheet.  I used butter buds on the waved broccoli.  Very filling and not fattening at all.

Mrs. Dash instead of fat and salt

Mrs. Dash lemon pepper or table blend or one of the other spices add taste without fat or salt.  I am really using these a lot and the lemon pepper is great on fish.  I used the crisco olive oil spray and fish and mrs. dash and that was it and it was very good.  Practically no calories.  I added broccoli waved with butter buds and a salad.

I learned that Por Vida is an initiative to encourage restaurants to offer a menu choice that is low fat, low sugar & low salt, with healthy portions.

  • Do you know what 5 lbs of fat looks like?  Yuck.  The instructor passed around what looked like a quarter section of a good sized watermelon and then the same size in muscle did feel heavier.
  • 2% milk is not ok.  Ok.  I bought the Greek yogurt after the class since the yogurt I was buying had 28 g of sugar and the Greek yogurt has twice the protein.
  • I received some valuable tools at last night’s diabetes class.  Measuring cups, measuring spoons, pedometer (5000 steps at least and 10,000 steps to lose weight), and a poster that shows a healthy plate with information on servings and servings sizes on the back of the poster.  Corn and peas are starches, not vegetables.  I did not know this.  I am happy to know I can eat 1-2 servings of these per meal.  I was surprised to know that a person should only eat one teaspoon of salt per day.  Yikes.  Everyone was surprised about the one teaspoon of oil or fat per meal.
  • So last night my grocery list included:
Mrs. Dash, Splenda Mocha Coffee packets, Butter Buds, Crisco Olive Oil Cooking spray, Balsamic & Red Wine vinegars.  I bought some roasted almonds.  Eating a few of these  with coffee satisfies my craving for chocolate.

Printable Book 27 pages Shape Pictures of the Alphabet

http://www.leonoreshield.com/

This is a 27 page book that illustrates the alphabet.  The idea is that the early learner will look at the top, middle, and bottom of the letter shape in order to recognize it more easily.

Breakdown on Low Glycemic Index

Carbs No Protein Yes
Carbs release insulin and tells most cells not to release any fat to burn.  Too many carbs (300 avg intake is way too many) and you crave more sweets because excessive insulin takes all sugar out of your blood.  Sugar damages your body; that’s why insulin is important.
Low carb diet means less hunger and no loss of muscle because you are eating more protein.
What you don’t want from too much insulin:
1. Converts sugar in the blood to fat in the cells — tells the body to store all the fat it can while the sugar is available
2. Tells the cells not to burn any fat, since there are plenty of sugar molecules to burn
3. Makes you crave more carbs
What you do want:
Keep your carbs under 30 per day.
Meat (that is not processed with carbs, such as chicken fried steak)
Broccoli
Spinach
Celery
Asparagus
Cauliflower
Lettuce
Cabbage
Mushrooms
Berries are low in sugar and high in fiber.

Nuts are low in carbs and high in omega-3 fats.
And try to eat very little (or NONE) of these:
Grains (that means no rice; you can substitute bean sprouts for rice)
Potatoes
Sugars

Affordable Housing - Response to Roland Shield on Facebook

The people who build homes want to get to the other side too.  People with money who want to be innovative are not being encouraged.  Affordable housing, that is $300.00 a month that is not going to become a crack slum would probably need lots of creative ideas.  I think rent averaging would be nice, like utilities.  Property taxes make affordable housing impossible because the property owners have to pay that.
On the no income, no job side of that, there is no place to live unless you have support or want to live in a shelter or with friends who will put up with you.  For low income students or single mothers or families with children or a couple who have low income jobs there are only agencies to be directed to.  I frankly don’t know what students do.
I think that some kind of contest to create affordable community housing that people could eventually buy or maybe even smart investors could buy would be a good idea.  If business people could profit from the affordable community living in some way like a free building for a business like a market or tax credits for a while.  Like patch a road, but without making it crappy.

Bead Organizer that's Easier than Plastic Boxes

This makes beads easier to sort and use than those plastic boxes.  I think this is true anyway.  This one was on Amazon for about twelve dollars.

Turn it up or turn it down.

I turn the volume up because I'm hard of hearing.  I turn the thermostat down.  I turn the a/c up for the same reason.  Turn the heater down is immediately understandable.

Recycling Old Vegetable Oil

I don't think I have enough old vegetable oil in my kitchen to figure out how to recycle it for my car. I don't own a diesel engine anyway.  I did find a little bottle of oil that is way too old to guess about it.  I'm saving it to use on those sticky price tags.  A little oil rubbed on them and then they soap off pretty well.

Additionally, I'm including a homemade playdoh recipe.  This is great stuff and cheaper than the store kind.  Cook on a low heat stirring constantly.  The pan will be ruined for this project only, but you can use the pan to make more playdoh.  Anyway, my pan was scorched too much to use for cooking anymore.  As you stir it and it takes only a few minutes to set up, it gets harder and harder to stir.  When it looks right pour it out onto foil so it will cool faster and then you can put whatever color you want to mix into it.

2 cups flour
2 cups warm water
1 cup salt
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
1 Tablespoon cream of tartar  (sort of expensive stuff, but recipe doesn't work without it)

No Pants Day

Save the Frogs Art & Poetry Contest

Isabel Johnson - Grand Prize Winner

Congratulations to 8th grader Isabel Johnson of Anaheim, CA, for her wonderful poem "Won't They?".
Won't They?
by Isabel Johnson, Age 13
Listening to frogs
Violins in the night
My children will see them
Won't they?
Sitting by a stream
As it rushes by
It'll always flow
Won't it?
Nothing is forever
Things always have an end
We won't always be together
I know it
The frogs did no harm
They deserve a second chance
The clock is ticking faster
Make haste

Take nothing for granted
And help where you can
To do nothing is to regret
To look away and forget.

FINA Pink Air & Pflash sources: Wikipedia & I remember that

In 1966, when "Pink Air" finally arrived at every FINA station, FINA replaced that campaign with a new one regarding an ingredient in its gasoline called "PFLASH." At a time when other US oil companies were promoting their gasoline products with campaigns such as Exxon/Esso's "Put A Tiger in Your Tank!",. Shell's "Platformate" additive that improved gas mileage, Texaco's invitation to "Trust Your Car to the Man Who Wears The Star" and Mobil's "Detergent gasoline"; ""PFLASH", was promoted as an ingredient in FINA gasoline that would improve driving pleasure by "turning red lights green," "smoothing out rough roads," "improving the food at roadside restaurants" and "making you feel less sorry you ever got a driver's license." FINA stations even offered free "Pflash" bumper stickers to motorists who pulled in for gasoline purchases.

Another use for coffee filters.  Squeeze a lemon with a coffee filter over it and then there is no need to fish out the seeds.

Gummie Bears and Caramel Sauce

This is my photograph of gummie bears with caramel sauce.  I just wanted to see if it would be a fun picture.  I used sugarfree caramel sauce because that is what I had.

Google Search Engine Image

I really like the mouse over magnifying glass on the Google Search Image that is being used today, Sunday, May 1, 2011 to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the first World's Fair.
The glass highlights an animated fountain and a dress display.
I remember the Hemisphere here in San Antonio (what year?).  We had a flat tire on the car after the fair was over and someone had to walk to a gas station.  No cell phones!  The phone exhibit at the fair had displays of how video phones would work, but I don't remember anything about cell phones.  I think there was also a display about drive through banking, but I'm not sure.  I think we already had that.
